Add Family Members to NZ Student Insurance: 2026 Guide

How to add a partner, spouse, or children to your NZ international student insurance policy. 2026 family premium costs, eligibility rules, maternity cover, newborn cover, and mid-policy addition process.

Introduction

Adding family members to New Zealand student insurance is available through all four providers. Partners and dependent children living with the student in New Zealand can be added at policy purchase or mid-term. Family premiums range from NZ$985 per year for a student-plus-partner policy with OrbitProtect to NZ$1,840 for a Comprehensive family of four with Studentsafe. Adding a partner roughly doubles the base premium; children add NZ$130 to NZ$220 each. Maternity cover is excluded by most providers — only Southern Cross covers pregnancy after a 12-month waiting period.

The good news is that all four major NZ student insurance providers offer family cover options that allow dependants to be added to the primary student’s policy. The less good news is that family cover adds significantly to the premium, the eligibility rules differ across providers, and the coverage terms for dependants do not always mirror the primary student’s cover exactly.

This article explains the family cover options available from Studentsafe Inbound, Southern Cross, Uni-Care, and OrbitProtect for 2026, with specific premium data, eligibility criteria for partners and children, and the enrolment process. It also covers what happens when a dependant arrives mid-policy, when a baby is born during the policy period, and when family members return home while the student remains in New Zealand.

Which Family Members Can Be Added

The definition of an eligible dependant varies slightly between providers, but a consistent set of relationships qualifies across the market. The following categories of family members are insurable under a student’s policy:

Partners and Spouses

All four providers accept partners and spouses as dependants under the student’s policy, provided they meet these conditions:

  • The relationship must be genuine and ongoing — a de facto partner, civil union partner, or legally married spouse
  • The partner must be living with the student in New Zealand for the duration of the policy
  • The partner must not be working in New Zealand in a role that provides employer-sponsored health insurance
  • The partner must not be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (as they would be eligible for publicly funded healthcare)

Providers do not require a marriage certificate — de facto partners are accepted on the same terms as married spouses, consistent with New Zealand immigration and relationship law.

Children

Dependent children can be added to a student’s policy, subject to age limits and dependency criteria:

  • Studentsafe Inbound: Children up to age 19, or up to age 25 if in full-time education and financially dependent on the student
  • Southern Cross: Children up to age 21, with no full-time education extension
  • Uni-Care: Children up to age 18, or up to age 21 if in full-time education
  • OrbitProtect: Children up to age 19, or up to age 23 if in full-time education

Children must be living with the student in New Zealand and must not be working full-time. Newborn babies born during the policy period can be added mid-term — coverage is usually automatic for the first 30 days, after which the baby must be formally added to the policy.

Who Cannot Be Added

The following relatives are generally not eligible as dependants under a student insurance policy:

  • Parents or parents-in-law
  • Siblings
  • Cousins, nieces, or nephews
  • Grandparents
  • Adult children who are working full-time or no longer financially dependent
  • Partners who live in a separate household or are not accompanying the student to New Zealand

Students who need to arrange cover for parents visiting New Zealand temporarily should look at visitor travel insurance products, which are designed for short stays and are priced accordingly.

Family Premium Costs for 2026

Family cover significantly increases the total premium. The premium structure varies by provider, but the general pattern is that adding a partner roughly doubles the base premium, and adding children adds an increment per child. Here are the indicative 2026 annual premiums for family cover across all four providers, based on a student under 30 on a 12-month policy:

Studentsafe Inbound Family Premiums

Studentsafe Inbound offers two plan tiers for families, matching the individual Essential and Comprehensive options:

  • Essential Family (student + partner): NZ$1,155 per year — covers the student and one partner with Essential-level benefits, NZ$500,000 annual maximum, no GP copay
  • Essential Family (student + partner + 1 child): NZ$1,420 per year
  • Essential Family (student + partner + 2 children): NZ$1,590 per year
  • Comprehensive Family (student + partner): NZ$1,380 per year — full Comprehensive benefits including NZ$1,000 dental, NZ$500 optical
  • Comprehensive Family (student + partner + 2 children): NZ$1,840 per year

Additional children beyond two are added at approximately NZ$170 to NZ$220 per child per year, depending on the plan tier.

Southern Cross Family Premiums

Southern Cross offers a single-tier plan with family options:

  • Student + Partner: NZ$1,160 per year
  • Student + Partner + 1 child: NZ$1,370 per year
  • Student + Partner + 2 children: NZ$1,540 per year
  • Additional children: NZ$150 to NZ$180 per child per year

Southern Cross applies the same underwriting approach to dependants as to primary students for pre-existing conditions — dependants with pre-existing conditions may be accepted subject to waiting periods and premium loadings.

Uni-Care Family Premiums

Uni-Care family premiums vary significantly depending on whether the Budget or Premium plan is selected:

  • Budget Family (student + partner): NZ$1,006 per year — Budget-level benefits with GP copay, surgical cap, and no dental or optical
  • Budget Family (student + partner + 2 children): NZ$1,349 per year
  • Premium Family (student + partner): NZ$1,260 per year — Premium-level benefits with GP copay, NZ$100 dental, NZ$100 optical
  • Premium Family (student + partner + 2 children): NZ$1,630 per year

OrbitProtect Family Premiums

OrbitProtect offers a single-tier comprehensive plan for families:

  • Student + Partner: NZ$985 per year — full comprehensive cover for both adults
  • Student + Partner + 1 child: NZ$1,155 per year
  • Student + Partner + 2 children: NZ$1,305 per year
  • Additional children: NZ$130 to NZ$160 per child per year

OrbitProtect maintains the lowest family premiums in the market, consistent with its position as the lowest-cost individual provider. See the 2026 comparison guide for full premium breakdowns.

Coverage Differences for Dependants

Dependants added to a student’s policy generally receive the same medical coverage as the primary student — GP visits, specialist consultations, hospitalisation, diagnostic procedures, and prescription medications are covered on the same terms. However, there are coverage areas where dependants may receive different treatment:

Dental and Optical

Dental and optical sub-limits in family policies are typically applied per person, not per family. A Comprehensive Family policy with NZ$1,000 dental cover provides NZ$1,000 per person — the student gets NZ$1,000, the partner gets NZ$1,000, and each child gets NZ$1,000. This per-person application is consistent across all four providers for 2026.

Maternity and Newborn Care

Maternity cover for a pregnant partner is one of the most important and most variable areas of family cover. The four providers handle pregnancy differently:

  • Southern Cross: Covers pregnancy and childbirth after a 12-month waiting period. The baby is automatically covered for the first 30 days.
  • Studentsafe Inbound: Excludes pregnancy and childbirth in the standard policy. Maternity cover is available as a paid add-on with a 12-month waiting period.
  • Uni-Care: Excludes pregnancy, childbirth, and all related costs. No maternity add-on is available.
  • OrbitProtect: Excludes pregnancy and childbirth. No maternity add-on available.

A student whose partner is pregnant or planning pregnancy during the study period needs to factor this into provider selection. Southern Cross is the only provider offering a clear pathway to maternity cover, and it requires a full year of membership before cover activates.

Repatriation and Emergency Evacuation

Repatriation cover — transporting remains or returning a seriously ill person to their home country — applies to all insured family members. If a dependant requires medical evacuation to a facility in another country, the family policy covers the evacuation costs for that dependant. The primary student is generally not covered for evacuation simply to accompany the dependant unless the dependant is a minor child.

The Enrolment Process: Adding Family Members

Adding family members to a student policy follows a straightforward process but requires documentation that students should prepare in advance.

At Policy Purchase

When purchasing the initial policy, the student selects the family option and provides:

  • Full name, date of birth, and gender of each dependant
  • Passport number and nationality of each dependant
  • The dependant’s relationship to the student (partner, child)
  • For children, confirmation of age and dependency status

All four providers allow family members to be added at the time of the initial policy purchase through their online application systems or through an education provider’s insurance portal.

Adding Dependants Mid-Policy

Family members who arrive in New Zealand after the student can be added to the policy mid-term. The process requires:

  • Contacting the insurer to request the addition of a dependant
  • Providing the dependant’s personal details and arrival date
  • Paying the additional premium, calculated on a pro-rata basis for the remaining policy period

The dependant’s cover begins on the date the insurer receives the completed application and payment — not retroactively from the dependant’s arrival date. Students should initiate the addition process before the dependant travels to New Zealand to ensure cover is active on arrival.

Newborn Babies

A baby born in New Zealand during the policy period is typically covered automatically for the first 30 days under the mother’s coverage, provided the mother is insured on the policy. After 30 days, the student must formally add the baby as a dependant and pay the additional premium. If the baby is not added within the 30-day window, the automatic cover expires and any subsequent treatment costs are not covered.

Pre-term babies, neonatal intensive care, and birth complications are covered only to the extent that the policy covers maternity care. If maternity is excluded — as it is with Uni-Care and OrbitProtect — neonatal care related to the birth may also be excluded, though emergency life-saving treatment for the newborn is generally covered under the standard hospitalisation benefit regardless of maternity status.

When Family Members Leave New Zealand

Family cover scenarios become more complex when dependants leave New Zealand while the student remains. The main scenarios are:

Partner Returns Home Early

If a partner returns to their home country partway through the policy, the student can remove the partner from the policy and receive a pro-rata refund of the partner’s portion of the premium from the departure date. The student’s individual cover continues unaffected. The refund is calculated as (remaining days / 365) multiplied by the partner’s annual premium component, minus any cancellation fee.

Children Finish School Early

If children return home before the policy expires — for example, to start a school year in their home country — the same pro-rata refund mechanism applies. The refund is calculated from the date the children depart New Zealand.

Student Returns Home, Family Stays

This scenario is not supported by student insurance policies. All dependant cover is contingent on the primary student holding an active policy. If the student returns home and cancels or does not renew their policy, all dependant cover ceases on the same date. Family members remaining in New Zealand would need to arrange their own insurance — which is unlikely to be viable if they are on visas linked to a student who has left the country.

FAQ

Can I add my partner to my policy if they have a work visa, not a visitor visa?

Yes. The visa type held by the partner does not affect eligibility for family cover, provided the partner is living with the student in New Zealand and is not eligible for publicly funded healthcare. A partner on a post-study work visa, an accredited employer work visa, or a partnership-based work visa can all be added to the student’s policy. However, if the partner’s employer provides health insurance as an employment benefit, that insurance will likely be primary and the partner may not need — or be eligible for — cover under the student’s policy.

What if my child turns 19 (or the age limit) during the policy year?

Cover continues until the end of the current policy period. The age limit applies at the time the policy is purchased or renewed, not mid-term. A child who turns 19 three months into a 12-month policy remains covered for the remaining nine months. At the next renewal, however, the child will exceed the age limit and cannot be included.

Can I add family members who are not listed on my visa application?

Yes. Insurance eligibility is not tied to visa listing. A partner who has obtained their own visa independently — for example, a partner who applied for a work visa separately rather than as a dependent on the student’s visa application — can still be added to the student’s insurance policy, provided the relationship criteria are met and the partner is living with the student.

Is family cover cheaper than buying separate individual policies?

Yes, significantly. A Studentsafe Comprehensive individual policy for the student is approximately NZ$780 per year. Adding a partner brings the total to approximately NZ$1,380 — an increment of NZ$600 for the partner, compared to NZ$780 for a separate individual policy. The family discount across all four providers ranges from 15% to 25% compared to purchasing separate policies.

Does family cover include travel insurance for dependants travelling to and from NZ?

No. The standard student insurance policy covers dependants only while they are in New Zealand. Travel to and from New Zealand — including flight delays, lost luggage in transit, and medical events occurring outside New Zealand — is not covered unless the policy specifically includes a travel insurance component, which most New Zealand student policies do not for inbound travel. Students should consider separate travel insurance for the family’s journey to New Zealand.
